Shine is a love letter to my wife Ellen, released a year after we got married. Sometimes I wish we had more time to basque in our post-wedding bliss, but instead in what sometimes feels like a cliche, we moved into a house and had a baby. This has been a huge year for us, giving me so much to write about and yet very little time to write. I have never loved Ellen more, and shine is about treasuring her - to what might be a selfish extent.
If you don't know Ellen, she is the most amazing, creative, and supportive person I know. After listening to an album worth of songs about ex-girlfriends, Shine feels like the first time I get to release a song that really captures just how important she is to me. Shine is simple and sweet and straight to the point. No need to search for deeper meanings, Ellen is the sparkliest, most shiniest person on the whole plant and I want to keep her all to myself.
Collaborating with Maddy Applebee, the animator for the music video and Ellen's second favourite person on the planet (which Maddy would disagree with) was a really special way to visualize the song. Together it became a shared love-letter to our favourite person, a celebration of of our love and Ellen.
