Liminal moments and rediscovery

Patterns has been out for 2 weeks. If you haven’t already, or wish to again - listen here and watch the video here.

I keep falling into patterns. Some comforting, some frustrating. I speak to my therapist about how they serve me and how they hold me back. Right now I’m in this exciting liminal moment between patterns. A deconstruction of the patterns I’m used to, a removal of myself from an old box and into a new one; where I get to decide which patterns to keep, which ones I throw away, and which ones to sew anew.

The making of an album falls into a pattern; a pattern I might refine, but always hold close. I write, I edit, I rediscover, I share, I play it with the band,  record it,  rediscover it,  share it, repeat. Rediscovery happens in the liminal moments; only possible because I have enough time away that I can forget about it - the melody, the meaning, the moment in my life. It allows me to hear a song with fresh ears, without bias or preference and it transports me back - offering a unique opportunity to reminisce or reflect. Patterns has been out in the world for two weeks. I will listen to the album soon, for the first time since we mastered the project - not with critical, improvement-obsessed, audience-centric ears, but with fresh ears, ready to rediscover.

Looking back, I have some thank you’s to make. To Josh Van Tassel for shepherding us and adding his magic through the recording and mixing process. To Harry Hess who mastered the project, a task I cannot imagine having a fine-enough ear to do. To Lizz Miles, who did the amazing artwork and captured the patterns that make up my life in the South Shore. To the team behind our videos, Connor Robins, John Wuhm, and Connor Lindsay who built this amazing visual world to add context and depth to our music. To Slaight Music for funding the project and making releasing music so painless. To the band - Braden, Sarah, Dan, Connor, and Ted - I wouldn’t do this if you were any less wonderful friends and incredible musicians. My wife Ellen, because I forgot to include her and she edits everything I write and insisted, but also because she is my muse and I owe her everything. And of course, to you the listener - I would write music whether I was recording and sharing it or not, but your belief and support is what makes all this other nonsense worthwhile. Thank you.

Patterns in all of its forms are out there, ready to be consumed! find Patterns wherever you listen to music, listen to the whole album if you have the time, and watch our video if you're into that kind of thing.

Sharing music is a love language. If you enjoy listening to the music we make, please share it however you share music <3
