Patterns is out today!! You can listen here and watch the music video here.
I love reading fantasy books. Most people that know this tease me about it, but if there aren’t magical swords involved, I don’t want to read it. In one of my favourite books, The Name of The Wind, the magic is comes from knowing the true name of things. I always think about this when I am naming a song or an album. Do you name a song after the catchiest or most poetic lyric? The most memorable title, so people can find it intuitively? Or can you find its true name, a title that adds greater depth or meaning to a song? As a listener, I actually don’t care. I don’t think an awful lot about it. But when it comes to my own music I think about it a lot, and I’m not sure I prefer one way of naming a song over another.
Occasionally I get it right and find the True Name of a song or a project. Patterns is my favourite song from the album. It’s where producer Josh Van Tassel added the most of his sparkle dust, where the whole band is at their best, and it’s simply the best song. So it would be easy to assume we just named the album after our favourite song - and maybe that’s true. But it is also the True Name of this album. Patterns as an album is about transformation: seeing, adapting to and changing patterns across our lives and the lives of our children and our parents. It’s about seeing ourselves in the great tapestry of the wheel of time (another fantasy reference for the dorks). Patterns marks a moment of looking backward and forward and seeing your whole life from above.
