Goldrush is out today! Listen here, watch the music video here, share it with all of your friends!

I am writing this a few weeks before the release, and by the time you are seeing this, I expect to be holding my daughter. As I prepare for what I am told will be one of the most amazing, difficult, and memorable days of my life, I try to put myself in the headspace of the July 1st version of Alex, new father. It's something I find utterly impossible to do. In contrast, I find looking back and putting myself in the headspace of younger Alex quite easy, and I think I owe a lot to music, and specifically songwriting.

Unlike reading old diaries, which for me offer a reminder of the details or lists of what life was like in the past, rediscovering old songs I wrote can transport me back to the emotions of the time. Generally speaking, I tend to write songs when the less-fun emotions are highest, and while I wish I had more reminders of the good times, there is something really special about finding comfort in the words of a younger me. There is also something really hopeful about knowing how I've felt, and knowing how I feel now.

There is a unique contrast for this release. Goldrush is a song about isolation, loneliness, futility, suicide, guilt, and shame – and here I am starting a family. I wonder if a younger Alex would have been able to write this song if he'd known how things would turn out.

Sometimes I wonder if starting a family and becoming less lonely will mean writing fewer songs, and then a parent reminds me that I have lots of less-fun emotions still to come. How comforting... I wonder if a song about being covered in shit will speak to people.

Goldrush is out today, (LISTEN HERE) find it wherever you listen to music and watch our video if you're into that kind of thing.
